Spa and hot tub hookups in the Phoenix Valley

Spa dealers deliver the tub and leave the electrical to you. Shane runs the 50 or 60 amp 240 volt circuit, sets the GFCI disconnect where the inspector wants it, and has it ready for the day the tub arrives.

Signs the spa needs an electrician

  • The spa is ordered and the dealer says the electrical is on me.
  • Our tub runs on a cord, and the heater shuts off when the jets are on high.
  • The spa breaker trips every time it rains.
  • I do not know if my panel can take a hot tub.

What a spa hookup involves

A hardwired spa runs on its own 240 volt circuit, usually 50 amps and sometimes 60 for a swim spa or a large model. The spa's spec sheet sets the breaker and the wire size, so we ask for the model before quoting.

Between the panel and the tub sits a GFCI disconnect. Code puts it at least 5 feet from the inside wall of the spa and within sight of it, so you can shut the tub off without leaning over the water. We mount it on the house wall or a post where you can reach it.

What a spa hookup costs

Prices on these pages are typical ranges for Phoenix Valley homes. Shane gives you the real number in writing after he sees the job.

Spa hookup within 30 feet of the panel

$1,200 to $2,200

What moves the price

A standard spa hookup within 30 feet of the panel runs $1,200 to $2,200 including the GFCI disconnect and the permit. Longer runs and trenching add to that.

Trenching across a yard is priced by the foot, and caliche or a route under pavers adds time.

What moves the number

Distance and route
Through the garage wall to a patio is the short version. Across the yard means a trench, conduit and a longer run of wire.
Spa amperage
Most tubs want 50 amps. Swim spas and some larger models want 60.
Panel capacity
If the panel is full or at its limit, the spa is often the job that forces a panel upgrade. Shane checks before you buy.

Permits, inspection and code

A spa circuit needs an electrical permit everywhere we work, inside city limits or out in the county.

The permit office and the utility change by city. We cover Ahwatukee, Maricopa, Mesa, Queen Creek and Apache Junction.

What code asks for

  • The spa disconnect sits at least 5 feet from the inside wall of the spa and within sight of it.
  • An outdoor spa needs GFCI protection on its circuit.
  • 120 volt outlets within 20 feet of the spa must be GFCI protected, and none can sit closer than 6 feet.

Questions about spa and hot tub hookups

Anything else, call (602) 879-5489 or send the form below.

Can my current panel handle a hot tub?

Usually a 200 amp panel can. A 100 amp panel with electric heat and AC often cannot.

How far does the disconnect need to be from the spa?

At least five feet, and within sight of the tub. That is the National Electrical Code rule inspectors in every Phoenix Valley city enforce.

Can I plug a hot tub into a regular outlet?

Only a 120 volt plug-in model, and it needs its own GFCI-protected outlet on a dedicated circuit. Most of those tubs cannot run the heater and the jets on high at the same time.

Why does my spa breaker keep tripping?

Usually the GFCI is catching a real fault. Water in the disconnect, a failing heater element or a worn pump seal can all leak current to ground.
